Project "L" Independent Performance Group is an Independent Winter Guard that was founded and formed in the fall of 2002. The group made its debut into the performance world in March of 2003 at a SHARP International show held at Bell Gardens HS. The group was composed of students from Lincoln High School and the surrounding Elementaries and Junior High Schools. It was solely formed to give the kids in the Lincoln Heights community an opportunity to express themselves through artistic dance and performance.
After a great 2003 season, Project "L" decided to take the next move up and join the WGASC Circuit. This allowed the members to compete against other Independent Winter Guards at shows where Color Guard was the only Category. Project "L" was competing in the Independent A Class Division. Their show "Internally Captivated" used the music of Evanescence and Rob Zombie, which helped identify the group as a rock style performance group. The cast consisted of 8 members who ranged from the ages of 11 to 19. For most, it was the first time a weapon was placed in their hands and so began the intense training that has built many talented individuals, some of which have moved on to World Class Drum Corps and Color Guards.
In 2005, the group took another step forward and entered into the WGI arena, competing in Regionals in Las Vegas and San Bernardino. Their show "Let's go Crazy" entertained audiences and gained many fans throughout the season. This gave the group a taste of the bigger picture and it made them crave more.
When the 2006 season came around, Project "L" was determined to go all the way and they entered into WGI and WGASC with full force. Their show "The Inevitable" displayed some great equipment, drill writing and performance skills from all members and staff. The season was intense as they were planning their "Road to Dayton" season, competing in Las Vegas, Santa Clara and San Bernardino. They made the trip to Ohio, and although they only performed in Prelims, the group felt successful to have finished the season with the trip to Ohio, despite the many obstacles they had to face.
Going into the 2007 season, Project "L" knew that they had their work cut out for them. Another intense set of auditions and rehearsals prepared the group for what was a changing environment for the guard. Moving from a rock style group to a more softer feel type performance, Project "L" impressed many with their "Moving On" program. The season was very significant to both members and staff. "Moving On" was a constant theme throughout the season. Again, competing in both WGASC and WGI, the group traveled to Ceres and San Bernardino for great Regional performances. Project "L" made the trip out to Dayton, Ohio once again, determined to make it past prelims. A most impressive prelims performance landed them a spot at Semi-Finals and gained them National fans. During their Semi-Finals performance, an accidental misplaced flag freaked out the guard and staff. It was a very close call that had all members anxiously waiting for results. When scores were announced, disappointment ran across all the members faces, but a coin toss later, they were up in their seats cheering and crying of joy, Project "L" had made WGI Independent A Finals. Project "L" had become a WGI Finalist for the first time, ending in 14th place after going into finals tied for 15/16th.
In 2008, Project "L" dedicated their season to the memories of their lost loved ones. Their show "Memoria in Aeterna" had audiences in tears throughout the entire season. From their Debut show, they had impressed the audiences and judges. Every show earned them new fans. Alumni, Friends and Family of Project "L" came out to see this beautiful production and sent great messages of support to the cast. A family of a Lost friend of the Staff watched Project "L" at the WGI West Power Regional and came out in tears. With the utmost respect and gratitude, they shared their thoughts and kind words with the members of Project "L". The family expressed their Thanks to the members for dedicating part of the show to their beloved Joseph Garcia, past Director of Axxis Winter Guard and friend to staff at Project "L". For the first time in Project "L" history, they had become the WGI West Power Regional Independent A Class Champions and had won the WGI San Diego Regional. To say that the season was intense doesn't give it enough credit. Everyone at Project "L" had set out to make another memorable season. The trip to Dayton, Ohio proved to the group that they had made their mark. The fans they had made in the past were there to show their support. Their local high school guards sent them messages of love and support. They set their minds to making finals for everyone the show was dedicated to and to all the friends and supporters. They did exactly that. Taking 2nd place in Prelims, coming in 3rd at Semis, they knew they were going to make another mark. They made WGI Finals once again, landing them in 11th place after Finals. "Memoria in Aeterna" was going to be forever captured in the hearts of many.
Now the group is ready to begin their journey to the 2009 WGI Championships and to show everyone that nothing short of Amazing can be expected from this year's cast. The Faith that they have in each other and their staff will carry them through this season. They are ready to show their "Amazing Faith" in the family they have formed at Project "L".
